/u/sarcastic_patriot Sure, the eyes were the terrifying part of that whole
display. |
/u/NiConcussions You must not have walked by the scratch and sniff
display. |
/u/LordCommander94 What about the touch and hold display? |
/u/AmountFun5697 ahh but you are forgetting the most important! the taste
test. |
/u/PretendsToBeAnArtist https://i.redd.it/bgnu9z6l1y6h1.gif |
/u/LordCommander94 Ahh yes.. you mean the taste and ingest test. Classy. |
/u/CamelCaseConvention We're just a bunch of wimps here. Victorian people ate
mummies for fun. |
/u/AmountFun5697 exactly what i was thinking |
/u/Main-Towel-3678 I personally enjoyed the nut and bolt window. |
/u/MechanicalTurkish https://giphy.com/gifs/xUNd9QgrvD0Iol0VUY |
/u/slayniac I was there on Ko Samui and there's a sign on the
outside of the glass display which says that geckos have
built their nests inside the mummy. Make of that
information what you will. |
/u/sceadwian See, now that's the way I want to go when I die, still
productively raising a family. |
/u/--MobTowN-- At least they can save you 10% on enlightenment. |
/u/DoYouKnwTheMuffinMan Yea I imagine a good way to avoid frightening small
children is to not take them to see a mummified corpse
in a glass box.
I don't have kids though, so I could be wrong.
🤷♂️ |
/u/Pleasant-Degree-3662 Depends on the kids ig. My daughter would 10/10 love
this 'cool monk'. The fact he's dead will only increase
the intrigue |
/u/BumWink I mean he does look hella more chill with the sunnies,
from eldritch horror to a cool cat. |
/u/mrgonzalez Easy to say when you're looking at the sunglasses |
/u/IHad360K_KarmaDammit Incidentally, this photo is claimed in a couple of
places online to show Luang Pho Daeng when he was alive.
That is actually Luang Phor Daeng Ratto, but it's an
understandable mistake, because in addition to the
similar names, both were from Thailand, both were
Buddhist monks, both were mummified and put on public
display after they died, and both have sunglasses placed
over the empty eye sockets of their corpses. |
/u/noctalla If had a nickel for every time a Thai Buddhist monk was
mummified and put on display after they died with
sunglasses over their empty eye sockets... |
/u/istolethesun12 Hahahahah!! You'd have a dime! |
/u/noctalla Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened
twice. |
/u/scrumpy33 But it's weird that it happened twice |
/u/No-Mulberry-8866 No, he'd have two nickels. Dimes are the smaller ones |
/u/KittyScholar It's wild how a children's cartoon has completely
rewritten that phrase. If someone actually ended it with
"...I'd be a millionaire!" or "...I could buy a yacht!"
I'd be confused |
/u/_TheLoneRangers Idk the cartoon, I've seen this reference a lot and my
brain completes it with the Mitch Hedberg "...I'd be
making money in a really weird way" |
/u/eighteen22 Is it common for Buddhist monks to be mummified and on
display? It's it to symbolize their commitment to
monkin' ? |
/u/IneffableOpinion It's rare and most Buddhist sects would frown on it.
There are some monks in Japan that did it too, but they
were a small group that did not represent the
mainstream. Self mummification is a pretty weird process
where you are basically committing suicide by starving
and poisoning yourself over a long period of time until
your body is completely dried out. It's strange that
Buddhists monks would do this because
1) Buddha famously invented Buddhism after almost
starving himself to death for a religion he had joined.
His great awakening moment was the realization that you
don't have to suffer and die. He rejected this type of
extreme meditation he thought was unhealthy and not
getting anyone closer to enlightenment. He founded his
new religion to replace the one he thought was ruining
people's lives
2) Buddhism also recommends no killing of any kind,
which includes suicide. Buddhism says you should show
compassion to all living things, including yourself. You
are not supposed to intentionally harm self or others.
Early Buddhists did not believe in killing animals or
people. Over time, the rules relaxed. So you will find
warriors that are Buddhist even though they kill people,
and Buddhists who eat meat. I guess suicidal monks are
another example of rules relaxing over time |
/u/i_make_orange_rhyme Buddhism also has a concept of "No ego".
Id question if "id like my body to be put on display as
a tourist attraction" complies with this. |
/u/screwyoushadowban The mummification part is a regional tradition in a few
Mahayana or Tibetan Buddhist places. The
display-to-the-whole-public part is an even narrower
subset of places, and at least some of the practice is
more of a modern thing, whereas in the past the
mummification practice was a personal thing and the body
would either not be displayed at all or only for the
consideration/meditation/reverence of other monks. |
/u/eighteen22 Interesting, thank you! |
/u/AkumaLilly Gotta reach enlightenment with style. |
/u/Solid_Snark Bro is still alive but in a deep meditative state. He's
playing the loooooong game. |

/u/muklan Thats....a kind of hell in Buddhism, as I understand it
their afterlife has a series of "comfortable" pit falls
that a person can get trapped in and wallow away in
until they are reincarnated as a lower life form. |
/u/--Sovereign-- Where's the pit that respawns me as a cat? |
/u/muklan Bro I said LOWER life form. |
/u/BluEch0 Animal realm, where according to the vedic
interpretation, you're incapable of higher thought and
(for some reason this is always highlighted alongside
intellect) unable to understand humor.
But you might be a lazy cat, you might be a dog in a
cage, you might be an ox toiling away with a plow. It's
not like you get to choose your next life |
/u/--Sovereign-- I would love to be a cat incapable of higher thought.
it's the pain of higher thought that necessitates humor
as a cope, so that's fine |
/u/Lebabil9 Cats experience humor through play with other cats by
surprising them, many mammals and birds, particularly
social ones, engage in humor play. |
/u/BluEch0 I'd argue higher though allows you to channel suffering
(including physical suffering, which animals are not
immune to) into comedy. Without those, you're just
bearing the full brunt of the suffering with no way to
cope. |
/u/BrbFlippinInfinCoins read that as "dog in a cape" because it is 90-100
degrees right now |
/u/Tuxhorn Not in this case. These monks believe that if they can
mummify themselves while alive/on death (which he did),
then as they never fully die, they beat the round of
rebirth. |
/u/glitter_witch Apparently he failed to self mummify and had to have
assistance in the mummification process by other
monks... does that impact the supposed outcome? |
/u/muklan Looking at your username, I bet you know really well
that intent is said to be more important than material
success in these kinds of things. |
/u/glitter_witch It would be my interpretation, but you never know! Some
religions get quite strict on process :) |
/u/Tuxhorn I don't know, i'm not very familiar with the views on
this practice.
Having read a bit of Buddhism, i'm curious as to how it
stays in line with the fact that everything is
conditioned, nothing lasts forever. Not the mountains,
nor the oceans, and definitely not a mummy.
Then again, this is an extremely niche school of
thought. |
/u/muklan Edit; my understanding may not be perfect here, but
theres a distinction in being a Bodhissatva, and being
locked in a permanent state of meditation. It WOULD skip
the in between, and also what youre supposed to learn
there, yknow? Its the kind of nothing that death isnt to
them. |
/u/_commenter that's actually what they are trying to achieve. not be
in hell but in a meditative state where their
consciousness lingers on after death.
